Nature Awed is published by North Coast AI LLC. It covers Ohio's dedicated state nature preserves and natural areas as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) describes them: what each preserve protects, its trails and visitor notes, whether it needs an access permit, and the statewide rules for preserves. We aren't affiliated with ODNR or with any organization that manages a preserve.

Method

The list of preserves comes from ODNR's GIS lands layer (features typed "Dedicated Nature Preserve" or "Non-Dedicated Natural Area"). Each is matched to its visitor page on ohiodnr.gov where one exists (104 do), to its row in ODNR's printed preserve guide, and to ODNR's access-permit table. A preserve gets a page of its own here when its ODNR page describes it in at least 300 characters; that is 95 preserves. The rest are rows in the full table.

Our checker re-fetches every source and confirms each of the 818 quotes still appears word for word (ignoring only spacing, letter case and quote-mark style), and it re-computes each preserve's counties, mapped acres and land centre from the GIS layer. If a quote or figure stops matching, the build stops until it is fixed. Mapped acres are our sum of the layer's parcels; centres are our area-weighted calculation; distances in the finder are straight-line miles from a ZIP code's Census centroid to that centre. None of these is a parking lot or entrance.

The finder's ZIP centroids come from the INTPTLAT and INTPTLONG fields of the U.S. Census Bureau's ZCTA gazetteer file, Ohio rows. The "Our take" boxes are our own plain-language readings of the quotes on the same page and add no facts. Pages were researched and built with AI assistance.
